The worldwide casino market, by structure
Online gaming is not one market — it's dozens of regulated markets that each report differently. We track how they're structured so our client benchmarks reflect the right rules, taxes and metrics. Canada is our worked example with the hard numbers; this page is the map.
How regulated markets differ
| Market | Structure | Regulator |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario, Canada | Open, competitive, many private operators | AGCO / iGaming Ontario |
| Alberta, Canada | Open market from July 2026 | AGLC / Alberta iGaming |
| United Kingdom | Open, licence-based, mature | Gambling Commission (UKGC) |
| Other Canadian provinces | Provincial-monopoly online platforms | Provincial lottery corporations |
| Various EU markets | Licence-based, market-specific taxes & rules | National regulators |
Why it matters for analytics: "GGR", tax treatment, bonus rules and what counts as a "player" differ by market. A benchmark built on the wrong market's definitions is worse than none — so we always instrument to the rules of the market a client actually operates in.
What we track for each market
- Market size & growth — wagers and gaming revenue where regulators publish them (as we do in detail for Canada).
- Channelization — how much play sits on regulated vs offshore sites.
- Segment mix — casino vs sports vs poker, because the margins differ sharply.
- Regulatory & tax regime — what reaches the operator's P&L after the state takes its share.
- Responsible-gaming framework — the rules our clients must design around.
We publish hard numbers only where an official regulator does, with a link to the source.
Where a market doesn't publish, we say so rather than estimate. For operator-specific market sizing we build
it as a paid engagement — see services.
